Intro

I'm Zehan Jin, my preferred name is Neal. This name comes from the amazing TV series White Collar, whose main character Neal Caffrey is simply too charming.

I'm currently a fourth year student in University of Toronto, majoring in Math & Stat, but I've also spent two years in the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) learning Financial Engineering.

Now my interest lies in data analytics, I like to select a topic I'm interested in, do some data wrangling and visualization, try and compare different models, and ultimately draw a conclusion with deepens my understanding of that topic.

Sadly, recently I didn't quite have much time to work on my interests, since I'm currently taking six pretty difficult courses in my final semester. They are Number Theory, Rings and Fields, Statistical Computation, Probabilistic Machine Learning, Methods in Data Analysis II, and Time Series. It's not a course combination that any sensible student would choose, but I wanted to graduate as soon as possible to save some money, and I wonder where my limit really is. After all my final exams at the end of April, I should have more time to work on the projects I'm interested in.

Work

League of Legends Analysis GitHub repo . League of Legends is my favorite MOBA game, but I'm only Silver and I look for ways to improve my skills. Equipped with statistical skills, I decide to get some data from Riot API, perform some EDA, try some feature engineering, and eventually be able to build a model that can both predict one's elo from past match history, and also provide me with some insight on what factors are most important in winning a match.

Interactive Digit Recognition GitHub repo. I learned some machine learning models in university and I think it would be cool if I can see it working in real life. So I implemented multiple models on the digit recognition task and built an interface where users can draw a single digit and see the prediction from the models in real time. A quick gif demo is included in the readme file of that link above.

There are definitely more work that I've done in university and my free time, and I'll integrate and refine them as soon as I finish all six courses in this semester.

About

Not my pretties photo, but I love the friendliness I've shown in my silly smile.

I love reading comics because I can always resonate with the stories. Whenever I feel super regretful for something I've done before and want to travel back through time to fix it, I immediately think of the Flashpoint, and remind myself that I can't change the past without losing what I already have. Similar analogy also comes from One More Day, where I learned that of all the possible lives I can live, there will always be some regrets. It's not the regrets I should focus on, but the things at hand, the family and friendship I already have. By resonating with the fictinal stories, I learned more and more on being grateful for my current treasures that I should cherish, instead of the past gems I have lost.

I also enjoy watching TV shows, my favorite ones include West World and Breaking Bad. I sometimes also resonate with the characters, and when I'm fully into watching the shows, I feel I'm personally experiencing those stories, and it feels like I'm able to detach myself from my current life and world to live another life in a different setting. I do enjoy that temporal inconsistency.

I became interested in data analytics in my second year in university. I was taking an intro data analysis course and learned various machine learning models (linear/logistic regression, LDA/DQA, SVM, K-means) and I found it exciting to be able to predict the test set with high accuracy, it made me feel that I have a magical crystal ball for the future. And later some philosophical concepts had me think about predicting the actions of human. There is one idea in West World, saying that humans are predictable, which deeply attracted me since I've definitely seen patterns in human history and in myself, thus my ultimate goal of learning data analytics is to be able to connect the dots in the past and extend it into the future.
